The 50 percent tariff imposed by the US has been giving sleepless nights to glass exporters in Firozabad, also known as the Glass City.
Firozabad’s glass industry, the pride of India and well known in the US for its artistic quality, is now facing a new challenge.
US President Donald Trump’s decision to raise import duties by up to 50% has caused serious concern among glass exporters in Firozabad.
Glass Manufacturers Export Association President Mukesh Bansal Tony and other major exporters have urged the government to provide economic relief and policy support. They warn that without timely intervention, Firozabad’s traditional glass industry could be pushed to the brink of collapse.
Mukesh Bansal on Thursday said Firozabad exports 70 percent of its handicraft items to the US.
“Goods worth Rs 400 crore have already been despatched from Firozabad for the Christmas festival and are currently on their way to the US. However, rising prices pose a serious threat, and there is a significant risk of damage to the goods en route,” he warned. “Just as the Indian government has signed a zero-percent tariff agreement with the UK, a similar arrangement should be made with the US. Only if the government provides a special package for exporters will we be able to survive,” he demanded.
According to estimates, glass and handicraft items valued at Rs 2,000 crore are exported from Firozabad to various countries each year, with over Rs 1,400 crore worth exported specifically to the US.
Exporters have urged the government to announce an immediate relief package, including subsidies and tax concessions on exports. They also called for efforts to remove tariffs through trade negotiations with the United States and the formulation of a long-term strategy to maintain India’s competitiveness in the global market.
